The forest was new to me. I wasn't used to going out of doors at night, much less hunting. Women in my time never went hunting unless it was to ride on a horse and chase a defenseless fox through the woods with hounds chasing it.

We were told what to do and when to do it.

I ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time and my life was ended - only to be given back when Carlisle found me and made me a vampire.

I never expected to fall in love, but that night. Running through the forest alone, I caught his scent.

Emmett.

The grizzly had torn him up, but he was still fighting. Fighting to get away and live.

I don't know how I did it. I was there in a less than a second, snapping the bear's neck and picking him up off the ground. His blood was flowing freely and the scent was intoxicating - like sandalwood and jasmine. I was a breath away from setting him down and lapping up his blood. I forced myself not to breathe. I felt something. Something stronger than the desire to drink his blood. I felt like he belonged with me and only Carlisle could help me now.

***

Hours later I found myself pacing outside the bedroom where Carlisle was with the boy. No. He wasn't a boy. But he wasn't a man yet either.

And I knew he was dying. I didn't have the strength to save him - to resist the moment when his heart would stop. That's why I'd brought him to Carlisle. I never asked him for anything - until I found the boy.

Carlisle stepped out into the hall, wiping his hand on a white towel. I could still smell the blood, but it didn't bother me as much.

"Is he...?" I couldn't even bring myself to say it.

"I'm not going to say he's going to be fine," Carlisle said, looking up from his hands at me. "We'll know in three days if he makes it through the transformation."

"I want to be with him," I said softly. I couldn't act like he meant nothing to me, though he shouldn't - I didn't even know him.

"I think that would be all right," he said. "He'll be in pain. A lot of pain, so nothing will make sense if he even says anything."

I nodded. I understood even though I'd not been with Carlisle when Edward and Esme were made. And I was the last to join their family - Carlisle had been hoping that Edward would fall in love with me. But Edward was never in awe of me like every other male had been when I was alive. I resented him for it.

Now there was someone who would be in awe of me - or at least I hoped he would.

I stepped into the room, closing the door behind myself and made my way to the bed in a flash. I sat down and the bed dipped with my weight. I reached for his hand, locking my cold fingers around his lukewarm skin. He was cooling, which I took as a good sign.

His skin was pale from the loss of blood, but he breathed - his lungs expanding as he took air into them. I could tell he was in pain - his brow furrowed, bringing his dark brows together. I reached up and brushed his curly hair from his forehead. It was soft and I liked the feel of it.

For three days I sat there, unmoving - watching him as he grew still and his skin grew hard as stone. His chest still moved up and down - that was the only thing that gave me hope that he would wake up in a few hours.

His heart had stopped beating, but he was still breathing and his brow wasn't furrowed like it had been before. He hadn't opened his eyes or said a word - and I couldn't wait for him to wake up and speak to me.

***

I couldn't take my eyes from his face. It was more beautiful now than what it had been when I'd picked him up in the forest. His face was that of a chiseled god - an Adonis.

When his eyes opened, I expected them to be red, but I wasn't ready for the shock of him really seeing me for the first time. I'd changed and taken a shower each day and today was no different. My hair was still damp from the rushed shower because I knew he would wake up very soon.

He reached up and captured the hair brushing my shoulder. I held very still, waiting for him to say something.

"I didn't think you were real," he said, his eyes running over me. His voice was deep and sensual as I had imagined.

"I am," I replied, bringing his hand to my lips. "How do you feel?"

"I feel better than I've ever felt," he said, his lips curving into a smile. "But before that there was a lot of pain."

"I know, but you'll never feel that again," I replied, looking into his eyes as I spoke. "What's your name?"

"Emmett McCarty," he said, not taking his eyes from mine. "You're an angel, aren't you?"

If I could have blushed, I think I would have then. It was different coming from him. It made my heart feel like it was still beating. Electricity hung in the air between us and I couldn't get any words out.

I was lucky that I didn't have to reply to him because Carlisle entered then.

"Hello, Emmett," Carlisle said, keeping his spot at the door. "How do you feel?"

"I feel better than ever," Emmett replied, his brow furrowing at Carlisle.

"There are a few things we need to discuss," Carlisle said, taking a seat on the opposite side of the bed from myself.

***

I was relieved when Carlisle left because I was worried Emmett really wasn't taking the news that he was a vampire as well as we hoped.

I was quiet and still for several minutes and our eyes never left each other.

He moved so fast that I wasn't expecting what he did. His lips touched mine and my eyes closed as I tasted him. There was no need to hold back with him because he was what I was. We couldn't hurt each other at all.

Our tongues swirled together and his venom mixed with mine.

It took me a moment to be able to pull back and look at him.

"You need to feed," I said quietly, taking his hand. "Come. I'll take you."

Emmett nodded and followed me out into the night.
